Cop books are classically shocking, stories about murderers, prostitutes, con men, rapists, police interacting with the dregs of society. Or the books show cops in a bad light, or perhaps they detail the career of a particularly noteworthy cop, or an undercover operation.
This book will be different from all the rest and surprise many people. It will show cops not as macho Harry Callahans but as caring people, most of whom were motivated to become cops to do good, help people, make a difference.
Some of the stories are quite ordinary, everything from changing an old lady's tire in the rain, and then her handing the cop (who is so wet he looks like he just swam in the East River) a hanky to dry himself, or buying a a pizza for a family who could not afford to eat.
Some are quite extraordinary - cops bending and even breaking the rules, risking their jobs to be able to help people, such as the cop who drove his patrol car out of Manhattan to Bergen County, New Jersey to help a sick child. But all stories told here have one common aspect: they will touch the heart and perhaps in some small way make some people, the next time they see a cop, look at them in different way.
All of the stories were collected by Scott Baker, an ex NYPD cop, and come from New York cops. But there will be a few other areas covered as well. Very few real names are used because some of the cops could still get in trouble for what they did.
